Architectural accessibility

Main Building and Historic Villa

Sikorskiego 107
66-400 Gorzów Wielkopolski

In front of the library's main building, there is a parking area with two spaces designated for people with disabilities.

The main entrance to the building is from Kosynierów Gdyńskich Street. The surface in front of the entrance is made of stone paving (with an uneven texture), which may pose difficulties for people using wheelchairs, crutches, or walkers. Access to the building is provided by automatic doors. The corridor and lobby offer convenient conditions for communication and free movement for people with disabilities. The building has two panoramic elevators that allow free movement on all publicly accessible floors.

Tactile guiding paths are installed on the ground floor – leading from the main entrance to the Information Centre and from the main entrance to the Integration and Activity Centre.

The stairs of the main staircase are fitted with contrasting, non-slip stair strips. Warning strips are placed at the beginning and end of the stairs. Handrails are equipped with overlays containing Braille inscriptions indicating which floor the stairs lead to.

Tactile maps are installed on the ground floor near the main entrance, as well as on the first and second floors. On the doors of the lending departments, offices, toilets, and other publicly accessible rooms, Braille plates with NFC chips or raised pictograms with Braille have been affixed.

At the main entrance and near the tactile maps on the first and second floors, there are sound navigation markers for blind and visually impaired people – Totupoint.

The library building is equipped with automatic door-opening systems. Automatic doors are located in the following areas: Reading Room for Books and Periodicals, Main Lending Department, Children’s Department, Audiovisual Collections Department, and Scientific Lending Department.

Accessible toilets for people with disabilities are located on:

  • the ground floor, where the Information Centre, Main Lending Department, Integration and Activity Centre, and Reading Room Complex are located,
  • the first floor, where the Children’s Department and the Audiovisual Collections Department are located,
  • the second floor, where the Scientific Lending Department, Regional Collections Department, Information and Bibliographic Department, and Administration are located.

Persons accompanied by an assistance dog are allowed entry to the main building and the Historic Villa.

At the main entrance to the library, there is a book drop box for the 24-hour self-service return of borrowed library materials (books, CD/DVD collections).

Access to the Historic Villa, where the Special Collections Department is located, is possible via a connecting corridor. The corridor is equipped with an elevator that enables people with mobility impairments to access the ground floor of the building. The first and second floors are not accessible to people with mobility impairments. Due to the building’s historic character, modifications or reconstructions are very difficult and often impossible to carry out.

Communication and information accessibility

Main Building and the Historic Villa

The Library offers a Video Interpreter service for deaf persons.
The Video Interpreter station is located on the ground floor of the main library building, next to the Information Desk (107 Sikorskiego Street, entrance from Kosynierów Gdyńskich Street), and is available Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The station is marked with a special graphic.
The Video Interpreter service enables an online connection with a sign language interpreter.
The interpreter, visible on the computer screen, will facilitate communication between a sign language user and a Library staff member.
A person wishing to use the Video Interpreter service does not need to make an appointment in advance.
They simply need to inform the staff member about the need to use this form of communication. For example, one can have a note saying, “I would like to use the Video Interpreter.”
The staff member will arrange the connection with the interpreter within a few minutes.

In the main building, stationary induction loops are installed:

  • at the Information Desk (ground floor),
  • in the Integration and Activity Centre (ground floor, room no. 2),
  • in the Main Lending Department (ground floor, room no. 6)

In the main building and the Historic Villa, we provide an FM hearing support system, which is used during cultural events or guided tours.

The Integration and Activity Centre offers specialized equipment for persons with visual impairments:
  • a computer workstation for visually impaired users with access to the electronic catalogue and the Internet,
  • Auto-Reader – two devices that read printed text aloud using synthetic speech,
  • PLEXTALK – a recorder that allows the creation of DAISY 2.02 audio books and music CDs,
  • 6 Czytaks – devices for listening to digital talking books.

The Centre is also equipped with two Braille printers and two Braille displays, but currently we do not have the appropriate software to operate these devices.

In the Reading Room for Books and Periodicals (ground floor, room no. 5), we provide an electronic magnifier with speech function.

City Branches

Branch No. 6 is equipped with a stationary induction loop.

In the city branches, there is no option to use a sign language interpreter either on-site or online.
